The Public Life of Private Taste

Taste is never entirely private. From moodboards to menus, we perform our preferences all the time, often without noticing what those choices signal.

The Public Life of Private Taste

To talk about taste is to talk about belonging. The things we call personal often come preloaded with context: class markers, cultural inheritance, digital habits, and the communities we want to be recognised by.

Preference as Performance

This is not necessarily cynical. Performance can also be a way of trying on possibility. But it helps to notice when preference becomes a public script rather than a private instinct.

  1. Taste communicates long before we explain it.
  2. Aesthetic choices are often social choices.
  3. Culture becomes more interesting when we read signals as carefully as surfaces.
